A Heartbreaking Transformation Just One Year Has Caused in America
One year ago, the environment was completely distinct. Prior to the American presidential vote, reflective residents could admit America's serious imperfections – its inequities and imbalance – but they still could perceive it as the United States. A democracy. A country where constitutional order meant something. A country headed by a respectable and upright official, even with his older age and increasing frailty.
These days, in late October 2025, many of us hardly identify the country we live in. Individuals believed to be illegal immigrants are collected and forced into vehicles, occasionally refused legal rights. The left side of the presidential residence – is undergoing demolition for an obscene dance hall. The president is persecuting his adversaries or perceived antagonists and insisting the justice department hand over an enormous amount of public funds. Uniformed troops are deployed into American cities under fabricated reasons. The military command, renamed the Defense Ministry, has – in effect – freed itself of day-to-day journalistic scrutiny as it spends possibly reaching almost one trillion dollars of taxpayer money. Institutions, attorney offices, journalism organizations are buckling due to presidential intimidation, and wealthy elites are treated like nobility.
“America, only a few months ahead of its 250-year mark as the planet's foremost free society, has tipped over the limit into autocracy and fascism,” Garrett Graff, commented in August. “Ultimately, more quickly than I imagined possible, it transpired in this country.”
Each day begins amid recent atrocities. And it's hard to comprehend – and agonizing to acknowledge – how deeply lost we have become, and the rapid pace with which it unfolded.
However, we know that Trump was properly voted in. Following his profoundly alarming initial presidency and despite the warnings that came with the knowledge of Project 2025 – even after the leader directly stated openly he planned to act as an autocrat just on day one – a majority of citizens chose him rather than his Democratic opponent.
While alarming as the present situation may be, it's more frightening to understand that we’re only nine months into this administration. What will three more years of this deterioration leave us? And if the three years transforms into something even longer, because there is nobody to limit this president from opting that additional tenure is essential, perhaps for security concerns?
Granted, all is not lost. There are legislative votes next year which might establish an alternate governmental control, if Democrats recapture either chamber of Congress. There are government representatives who are attempting to apply certain responsibility, for example lawmakers currently launching an investigation into the attempted money grab by federal prosecutors.
And a presidential election in the next cycle could begin us down the road to recovery just as the prior selection put us on this regrettable path.
There are millions of Americans protesting in public spaces of their cities, like they performed in the past days during anti-authority protests.
An ex-cabinet member, wrote recently that “the dormant powerhouse of America is stirring”, similar to past after the Communist witch-hunt era in the 1950s or throughout the sixties activism or throughout the Nixon controversy.
During those times, the tilting vessel finally returned to balance.
He claims he knows the indicators of that revival and observes it occurring currently. As support, he cites the large-scale demonstrations, the broad, bipartisan pushback to a broadcaster's firing and the largely united defiance by media to accept government requirements they solely cover approved content.
“The sleeping giant always remains inactive until certain corruption turns extremely harmful, a particular deed so offensive toward public welfare, some brutality so loud, that the giant is compelled except to rise.”
It’s an optimistic take, and I appreciate his knowledgeable stance. Perhaps he will turn out correct.
In the meantime, the crucial issues endure: can America return to normalcy? Is it possible to restore its standing globally and its devotion to legal principles?
Or do we need to admit that the historical project worked for a while, and then – swiftly, totally – ended?
My negative thoughts suggests that the latter is true; that everything might be lost. My optimistic spirit, though, tells me that we have to attempt, in whatever ways available.
For me, working in journalism analysis, that involves encouraging reporters to commit, more completely, to their duty of overseeing leadership. For some people, it might involve participating in political races, or organizing rallies, or discovering methods to safeguard voting rights.
Under twelve months back, we were in an alternate reality. In the future? Or in several years? The reality is, we are uncertain. Our sole course is to strive to persevere.
