Gas Detonation Takes Three Carabinieri Amid Eviction Procedure in Italy
Three police officers lost their lives and at least 15 people were hurt in what appears to be premeditated blast caused by gas at a farmhouse in northern Italy.
How It Happened
The blast was triggered as law enforcement and fire personnel entered the property close to the city of Verona to execute an eviction order for a brother and sister trio aged in their 50s and 60s.
Each of the three victims who died were members of the Carabinieri military police.
Arrests and Aftermath
One male and one female were taken into custody at the site and another man who fled subsequent to the incident was located shortly later. Each of them have been taken to medical facility.
The blast could be audible approximately 5 kilometers away and photographs from the area revealed the property turned into a heap of debris.
“This is a time for grieving,” commented Interior Minister Matteo Piantedosi, who added that previous tries had been made to remove the brother and sister trio in the previous occasions.
Financial Context
The head of the Veneto area, Luca Zaia, stated the property was subject to an eviction order due to debts incurred by the three owners.
Mediators had been assigned to engage the brothers and sister who had barricaded themselves into the house. When the police reached the location soon after 03:00 (01:00 GMT), officials believe one of the siblings triggered the explosion.
“Upon entering the house, we were confronted with an act of absolute madness,” local police chief Commander Papagno stated to the media.
A propane tank had been activated, and the blast precisely impacted our officers,” he added.
Molotov cocktails were also located at the residence, the interior minister said.
Injuries and Destruction
Injured individuals by the incident included an additional 11 personnel of the Carabinieri as well as a trio of personnel of Italy's state police and a firefighter.
As stated by the Verona prosecutor, the property was in a derelict state and had no electricity.
The official thought the detonation had happened on a floor above the entrance and told journalists it was a “intentional and planned killing”. Just prior to the explosion, he said personnel had “detected a whistling noise, probably the gas canisters being turned on”.
Community Reaction
“All of us understood the scenario was critical,” nearby inhabitants told reporters, noting that the three had previously threatened to “blow themselves up” rather than vacate the property.
“The incident exacted a ‘dreadful, extremely sad and dramatic price’.”
Minister of Defence the Defence Minister stood alongside other government officials in commemorating the three officers who had died in the performance of their duties.
