Giants QB Wilson Fires Back at Ex-Mentor Sean Payton Over Quarterback Remarks

NY Giants signal-caller Russell Wilson didn't mince words on social media this Tuesday, responding to latest criticism from his former coach Sean Payton.

"Tasteless... but not surprised...," Wilson declared on X. "Had no idea you're still offering rewards 15+ years later through the media."

Wilson's response directly referenced the notorious bounty scandal controversy from 2009 to 2011, when Payton led the Saints.

At that time, the NFL determined that the Saints had incentivized players for delivering aggressive tackles on rival teams. Consequently, Payton received a suspension from the NFL for one season.

The Cause of the Latest Dispute

The quarterback's reaction came after Payton delivered comments after Denver's remarkable comeback victory over the Giants. Payton remarked that the Giants had "found a little spark" with Jaxson Dart, who has replaced Wilson as the first-string QB.

Additionally, Payton hinted that he had told Giants owner John Mara that he would prefer playing against Wilson instead of Dart.

"I spoke to John Mara not too long ago and I said, 'We were hoping that the switch would've happened long after our game,'" the coach stated.

Context of the Wilson-Payton Relationship

  • Wilson was traded to the Denver from the Seahawks in 2022 and signed a five-year, $245 million extension.
  • The Broncos finished 4 wins and 11 losses in his first season prior to the team brought in Payton, who was returning to the sidelines after a stint in TV commentary.
  • Payton replaced Wilson late into the 2023 season, a decision that ensured the quarterback from getting injured.

Had Wilson stayed on the team by March 2024, his $37 million pay for the following year would have been guaranteed. In the end, Wilson was let go, ending the ugly split between the player and his coach.
