Heat & Trail Blazers Earn First Victories After Recent Detentions

NBA game action

Miami scored 86 first-half scores against the Grizzlies

The Heat claimed a crushing 146-114 win against the Grizzlies in their first basketball game after guard Terry Rozier was arrested over suspected illegal sports betting.

Trail Blazers coach Chauncey Billups was additionally arrested as part of a extensive FBI investigation into illegal gambling. Both men contest the allegations.

But, the Heat were focused as they scored 86 opening half scores to be ahead of Memphis by thirty-nine after two quarters, the biggest halftime lead in the team's 37 year history.

Adebayo top-scored with twenty-four scores and later stated Rozier had the support of the team.

"We stand behind him. Complete backing," Bam said. "You support him through and through. That's our brother at the end of the day."

Miami head coach Spoelstra commented: "Rozier is somebody who is important to everyone. He has made a beneficial influence on our team.

"Our thoughts are with him and our care for him as he goes through the situation."

The Trail Blazers also won their initial match since the detentions, with Brazil-born Splitter taking over as interim coach in Billups' absence and leading the squad to a convincing 139 to 119 win against the Warriors.

"We all had positive times with Billups and how he coached," Splitter said. "Our thoughts are with him and his family but we have a job to do."

NBA Commissioner Adam Silver 'Disturbed' by Arrests

Speaking about the detentions for the first time, NBA commissioner Adam Silver said he was "very upset" by the incidents of the past few days.

"There's nothing more important to the league and its fans than the fairness of the game," he told a broadcaster. "And so I felt uneasy. It was disturbing."

Silver further said an league probe into the player's actions in March 2023, when there was "aberrational betting" in a match he played for the Hornets against the Pelicans, discovered no wrongdoing.

"It was brought to our attention by the regulators and the gambling firms," he continued.

"We then looked into the matter and were very transparent regarding it. Although there was that aberrational betting, we, frankly, found no evidence.

"The federal government has legal authority... [it] can threaten to put people in jail, can do all kinds of things that the league office can't do.

"So, we've been working with them from that point. And, of course, what they announced yesterday was an charge.

"And two and a half years after, he has not been found guilty of any offense, in fairness to Rozier.

"Clearly, it doesn't look good, but he's been put on administrative leave, and so it is a balance here between upholding rights and investigating."
