The beloved police drama Line of Duty is officially returning for its seventh season, confirmed by the broadcaster.

An upcoming six-episode series created by Jed Mercurio will begin filming in Northern Ireland this spring, as confirmed by the network.

The actress expressed excitement about the return, stating she was "thrilled" about the series' return. Her co-star added, "How wonderful it is to know that the main trio will be reuniting together next year."

The last season wrapped up in 2021 with a finale that attracted over 17 million audience members. Rumors about a potential return have been widespread for some time, but confirmation only arrived this week.

New Challenges for AC-12

The seventh season begins with the anti-corruption unit no longer existing and rebranded as the new police oversight body, according to production details.

Steve Arnott, Vicky McClure's role, and Adrian Dunbar's part remain tasked to tackle misconduct within the law enforcement.

The team's mission "faces unprecedented challenges", and in this climate, these officers will take on their "most sensitive case to date."

New Character and Complex Case

A new character, Det Insp Dominic Gough, portrayed as a charming officer celebrated for takedowns of criminal networks, faces allegations of misusing his authority to become a offender.

Yet, his case could be a deliberate distraction from a larger danger still operating in the shadows, the teaser suggested.

In a statement, Jed Mercurio commented: "Everyone involved feels enormous gratitude to the show's fans."

"We're privileged to have had so many followers watch the ups and downs of the unit over six previous seasons and we are thrilled to be returning for a new season."

He added: "Corruption in the UK was thought to be over while the series was off air, so I've been forced to use my imagination."

Actor Responses

Martin Compston described being part of the police drama as "the role of a career".

"Not only the program's popularity but the colleagues I've worked with I now call dear friends."

"I can't wait to pull the waistcoat on again and reunite with everyone," he said.

Vicky McClure stated: "Obviously I'm very happy Line of Duty is returning! Can't wait to work with Jed, Martin and Adrian again. Belfast, we'll see you soon!"

Adrian Dunbar noted: "As we count down the unit days of Christmas, how exciting it is to know that the central trio will be working together soon."

"Delighted with the news and looking forward to those unexpected plot developments."

Show History

Line of Duty launched in 2012 and became a highly successful TV dramas of the last decade, featuring notable actors such as Lennie James.

Broadcasters has not yet announced exactly the new season will premiere.

The conclusion of series six drew the extended plot about the hunt for kingpin known as "the mysterious H" to a close, and the creative team said at the time there were no intentions for further series.

Nevertheless, the corporation confirmed on Tuesday that a seventh series is now being produced.
