Seattle's LGBTQ+ Pride Will Go Ahead for World Cup Despite Formal Protests by Egypt and Iran
Arrangements to hold Pride-focused celebrations throughout the city amid the upcoming FIFA World Cup tournament will continue as scheduled, even after Iranian and Egyptian football federations raised objections regarding a planned “Pride Match.”
Venue Regulations and City Celebrations
Seattle's planning committee have confirmed they are “proceeding as planned” with celebratory programming outside the stadium. This coincides with the Group G match featuring Iran and Egypt on June 26th. Additionally, FIFA will permit rainbow flags inside the stadium.
“As the local organising committee, our primary task is to prepare our city to host the matches and oversee the city experience beyond Seattle Stadium,” said the vice-president of communications.
Legal Background Behind the Formal Complaints
Homosexuality is illegal in Iran, and in Egypt, public decency statutes are often used to prosecute LGBTQ+ people. The Egyptian federation stated it refused to be linked to events that “fundamentally oppose the cultural, religious and social values … in Islamic and Arab societies.” In a parallel move, Iran’s football federation also raised “objections against the issue.”
FIFA's Stance Regarding Symbols
Fifa maintains operational control of stadiums during games. While its rules forbid banners and flags with overtly political content, it allows flags expressing “sporting and social symbols,” which explicitly includes the rainbow flag. This policy was applied at the most recent World Cup in Qatar and was reaffirmed after incidents of authorities confiscating flags.
- This special fixture was an idea created to showcase the city's longstanding tradition of advocating for equality.
- An artistic competition is underway to create images celebrating the event.
- Organizers are committed to ensuring all fans feel welcome in the Pacific Northwest during the tournament.
The Pacific Northwest is home to one of the nation’s most prominent Iranian-American communities, a thriving Egyptian expatriate community, and rich communities from every competing country. “Our commitment is to ensuring everyone experience the hospitality, dignity, and respect that characterizes our part of the country,” organizers added.
