The Fashion Icon Antony Price, Renowned for Designing for Iconic Acts Like Bowie and Duran Duran, Passes Away at Age 80.
Fashion legend Antony Price, the influential UK-based designer responsible for many legendary styles associated with artists from David Bowie to Roxy Music and even royalty like Queen Camilla, has passed away at the age of 80.
Price was best known for his sculptured silhouettes and dramatic aesthetics, including the soft-colored suits that featured in rock band Duran Duran's classic music video for "Rio".
"In a tribute, they called him a 'visionary' and a 'kind, intelligent and razor-witted friend,' the band released a statement across their platforms."
His passing follows less than a month after he debuted his most recent collection in London, marking his return to the runway after over three decades. The performer Lily Allen walked in a dress inspired by the famous black velvet "dress" made famous by the late Princess Diana.
A Pioneering Career
Born in Yorkshire in 1945, Price moved to London at the start of the 1960s to enroll at the prestigious Royal College of Art.
Upon completing his studies, he commenced his career designing men's fashion at the label Stirling Copper and was responsible for the form-fitting, button-fly pants that Sir Mick Jagger wore during the band's Gimme Shelter tour in 1969.
He established his eponymous line in 1979 and staged his first fashion show a year later. The show was launched by creations worn by supermodel Jerry Hall, who later wore the wedding dress Price designed for her for her wedding to Sir Mick Jagger.
Working with Legends
A key creative partner of David Bowie, Price created the distinctive jacket the singer wore for his "As The World Falls Down" music video in 1986.
His trademark skill to fuse elements of men's and women's fashion along with his expert craftsmanship in shaping form-fitting garments made him a "one-of-a-kind talent," as stated by the British Fashion Council.
During the nineties, he commenced designing outfits for the then-Duchess of Cornwall, Camilla, including various looks for her US tour after becoming Duchess.
After a career spanning more than five decades, Price held his ultimate fashion presentation in London last month in collaboration with the label 16Arlington.
