The New Animated Series' Opening Sequence Chose the Incorrect Popular RPG Show Track

The Mighty Nein, the newest animated series from the beloved role-playing group, revealed an exciting opening credits. It showcases our favorite cast of misfits, outcasts, and criminals kicking ass and taking names, while also hinting at multiple heart-wrenching personal histories for characters including the voice actor's mage Caleb, and Travis Willingham's warlock orc, the character Fjord.

All in all, the intro looks stunning. However, I felt that something was lost in the song choice.

The intro uses "Welcome to the Continent", a truly stellar song composed by artist the talented musician. It's a track originating from the official score of the same name, the second release released by Critical Role Productions LLC's music division their music brand. It's a wonderful nostalgic choice, and I believe that fans of the second campaign will love its inclusion.

But for me, The series' intro fails to capture the excitement and energy that accompanied the show's actual-play adventure. "It's Your Turn", written by singer-songwriter the artist, was an instant classic for me when it was initially unveiled in that year, and it only got better when co-founder Sam Riegel added lyrics to the melody for the animated Campaign 2 opening in 2018.

Featuring vocals from Ashley Johnson, another performer, a co-star, as well as Riegel himself, the song was catchy and fun. Back then, I hadn't even watched the follow-up series yet, but it was so infectious that I still saved it on my device. This track that excites you before you dive into an episode of adventurous fun.

The Mighty Nein's opening with "Welcome to Wildemount" fails to hit the same chords in my opinion. It's an impressive composition, but based on my understanding of the group, I feel that its tone is somewhat mismatched.

Naturally, Critical Role has stated that the animated show will have a few surprises and differences from the actual-play campaign. A tonal change for its opening seems to be among these.

This animated adventure will be released on Prime Video from Nov. 19. For those eager before that, or wish to prepare to learn about the characters of Critical Role's Campaign 2, the actual play are available on the audio platform and YouTube.
