US Social Media Personality Penalized After Large-Scale E-Bike Gathering on Iconic Australian Bridge
NSW authorities have issued a fine against an US-based online influencer and served two driving violation citations for reported reckless operation following a large group of e-bike riders gathered on the Sydney Harbour Bridge during the busy commute on Tuesday.
The Event: A Prohibited Ride
A gathering of around 40 individuals operating electric bikes and motorbikes proceeded along the bridge’s main deck, an area where bicycle riding is banned. The assembly subsequently reversed direction and traveled through the downtown area and Haymarket.
"This had a risk of serious injury or fatalities," remarked NSW police assistant commissioner the officer on the following day.
Law enforcement said they did not immediately pursue the group out of safety concerns but instead located the group at a scenic Sydney lookout near the Botanic Gardens, where they dispersed.
Penalties Issued for Content Creator
Later in the week, authorities announced they had issued the American online personality who goes by the influencer, twenty-six, with two traffic infringement notices for negligent driving (with no death or previous bodily harm), carrying a fine of $562 and three demerit points each, in relation to the bridge ride-out. Officials noted that inquiries were continuing.
The personality is said to have more than 3.4 million followers on one platform and over 1.2m on Instagram.
Creator's Response
The content creator spoke with a local publication recently after the incident gained traction on news sites and social media, stating he was sorry for giving "the biking community" a negative image.
"I accept the blame. That was among the safest gatherings I’ve ever seen," he told the publication. "I am a visitor here, so I’m going to abide by the rules and standards of the city. So when I decided to do a public meeting it was not meant to include a group ride, it was just to greet people near the bridge."
"I did not know the area well, I am to blame we found ourselves on the bridge and I had a decision to make: either the group rides the full length of the bridge and comes back, an illegal act. Or we turn around, essentially, before entering the bridge. And I made the decision at the time to go back."
Broader Context on E-Bike Regulation
The increase of e-bikes on streets across the country has prompted growing calls for stricter rules. A senior government official, Mark Butler, recently said that non-compliant electric bikes were a "total menace on the road."
"Kids have done stupid things on bikes ever since the penny-farthing [but] the harm that are coming into our ERs are truly severe," he stated. "We’ve got to make sure we stop these things entering the country [and] officers are given the powers to take strong action, to take them away, to crush them, to destroy them."
The state recorded 226 injuries associated with electric bikes in the previous year. But, in the initial half of the following year, that figure surged to two hundred thirty-three injuries plus four deaths.
